On the eve of the last debate before crucial primaries, Republican presidential challengers Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich battled for conservative support by targeting President Barack Obama in increasingly strident attacks Tuesday.

Santorum Has Long Associated Black People With Welfare; Has Not Always Been Big On Religion

Remember when Rick Santorum denied saying he didn't want to "make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money," even though that's exactly what he said? It turns out Santorum has been talking about keeping black people from other people's money for decades.

In an interview with Philadelia Magazine in 1995, Santorum was asked what he had done in his legislative career to realize Martin Luther King's hopes. This is how he answered:

Santorum: "well, it's not... you don't necessarily..."

Santorum's Press Secretary: "Welfare."

Santorum: "That's right. Welfare reform. Welfare reform that will get blacks working and eventually bring about racial equality."

What's even more strange is that Santorum brought up Martin Luther King in the first place. It's not like he was caught off guard by a gotcha journalist. When asked if he had ever encountered a book or movie to inspire his political worldview, he answered that there wasn't any particular book, but that Martin Luther King had a profound influence on him.

How far this guy has come. He goes from being pro-choice and not counting the Bible as a book that had any influence on him, to wanting to impose his newfound religious beliefs upon the entire nation.
